I bought this for my Pentax K-x. I don't miss the LCD screen or the power zoom.
I was looking for an even, powerful flash that could illuminate a large group in a ballroom sized space. This seems to fit the bill. If extra control is needed to tame the light, it can be done through the camera via its flash EV setting, or with the included reflector and diffuser. The diffuser plate seems to work best for bounced shots. (It is designed to be used with wide angle focal lengths, but I did try it with standard and short telephoto settings, too.)
A more powerful diffuser is needed if you want to use the flash for closeups. This unit should work wonderfully with the more wildly shaped diffusers, such as the ones made by Gary Fong.
The zoom is selected manually, with the focal length viewed through a small plastic screen. I think leaving it at the 35mm setting is best for all around use, if you don't want to constantly change settings.
The power switch uses two settings. The middle setting is for "front curtain sync mode". That syncs the flash with the shutter simultaneously. The right setting is for "rear curtain sync mode". That's where the flash fires BEFORE the camera shutter clicks. This is useful for slow shutter speeds (1/15 or slower). It can create a light trail next to a subject if things are moving along quickly.
If you don't want to fiddle with manual settings, the flash can be used in full auto mode. Just remember to use a more powerful diffuser to tame the light. Better yet, leave the included diffuser on, and then clip on another diffuser on it (or use the reflector + diffuser). I'm not kidding... this flash is one powerful unit with even lighting. Well worth the $ I paid for it.
NOTE: Make sure the flash is firmly inserted. Otherwise, it'll trigger brightly enough to wash out your shots. This prevents the AUTO mode from working properly. I measured the voltage of the flash with a voltmeter before using it. It registered at 4.9 volts DC when I checked it. I realize this might not be necessary, but it's a useful check to do before using any new flash on a DSLR. Pentax DSLR's can use any external flash up to about 20v DC.
